Form and Function: A Clay Furniture Building Workshop With Austin Coudriet
At Tao of Clay, our mission is to harmonize the artistry of clay with the therapeutic principles of mindfulness and organicity. This philosophy was vividly brought to life with our ceramic furniture workshop between Tao Of Clay and guest artist Austin Coudriet. This unique workshop exemplified how collaboration and the fusion of diverse perspectives can lead to innovative creations, pushing the boundaries of traditional ceramics.
A Meeting of Minds: Josh Herman and Austin Coudriet
Josh Herman, founder of Tao of Clay, draws inspiration from nature and Eastern philosophies, emphasizing mindfulness and organic simplicity in his creations. His approach is deeply rooted in the belief that the process of creation is as significant as the final product. Austin Coudriet, a Montana-based ceramicist, brings a contrasting yet complementary perspective.
Coudriet's work blurs the lines between functionality and sculpture, often resulting in pieces that are both utilitarian and artistically expressive. Coudriet's background in architecture and design informs his meticulous approach to structure and form.
The collaboration between Tao Of Clay and Coudriet was sparked by mutual admiration and a shared passion for exploring the possibilities of clay. Their combined expertise offered workshop participants a holistic view of ceramic artistry, blending intuitive creativity with structural precision.
Workshop Highlights: Bridging Art and Function
The workshop delved into the concept of "organicity," encouraging participants to explore the natural flow and form of clay, creating unique forms that evolve into everyday sculptures and furniture pieces.
Coudriet introduced techniques such as using a paint scraper for coil compression, emphasizing the importance of structural integrity in ceramic furniture. In fact - Austin's favorite scoring tool is a good old fashioned fork. He likes the fork because it creates deep scores that really allows two pieces of clay to join together. This method, though unconventional, showcased how traditional tools could be repurposed to achieve innovative results.
Participants were also introduced to the idea of using internal grids to support flat slabs, a technique that expanded the possibilities of clay construction. This approach allowed for the creation of larger, more complex pieces, bridging the gap between sculpture and functional furniture.
