Six Things To Remember When Starting Your Journey With Clay

Working with clay is both a creative and introspective endeavor. At Tao of Clay, we believe that the art of ceramics is not just about crafting objects but also about personal growth.

Follow along for 6 things to remember when working with Clay

  1. Ask For Help

Tao of Clay, founded by globally renowned artist Josh Herman, brings over 35 years of expertise to both seasoned artists and first-time ceramicists. Clay work, like any meaningful craft, requires patience and collaboration. Join us, ask questions, and grow your practice within a supportive and collaboratively oriented community.

2.Understand the Nature of Your Clay

Just as Taoism emphasizes harmony with nature, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the type of clay you're using. At Tao of Clay we use a unique in house clay body for to enhance the outcomes of our finished work. Remember: different clays have varying textures, moisture levels, and firing requirements.

3.Embrace the Principle of Wu Wei (Effortless Action)

Wu Wei refers to the concept of non-action or effortless action, encouraging individuals to align with the natural flow of life. When working with clay, this means  allowing the material to guide you, rather than forcing it. By observing and responding to the clay's inherent properties, you cultivate a harmonious and spontaneous creative process, resulting in more authentic, expressive and powerful work. At the start of each Tao of Clay course we begin with a 5 minute meditation to help set the tone for this practice.

4.Prioritize Mindfulness and Presence

Working with clay is a meditation. It requires your presence and a fine quality of attention.  Focus on the sensations—the coolness of the clay, the pressure of your hands, the rhythm of your movements. This attentive presence not only enhances the quality of your work but also fosters a deeper connection to the creative process.

5. Create a Harmonious Workspace

Your environment significantly impacts your creative flow. Tao of Clay is located in historic Barrio Logan, a multi-ethnic creative community surrounded by street art, parks and local artisans and San Diego Bay. . When getting started with clay make sure your workspace is clean, organized, and free from distractions. Incorporate elements that inspire tranquility, such as natural light or a visit from our resident shop kitty: LAO.

6. Practice Patience and Non-Attachment

Taoist philosophy teaches the value of patience and letting go of rigid expectations so we are in alignment with nature and the world around us.  A practice crucial to our development as artists. In ceramics, not every piece will turn out as envisioned, and that's part of the learning journey. Embrace imperfections as lessons, and remain open to the unexpected outcomes that the clay may present. In fact, the greatest creative inspirations and breakthroughs occur when accidents ‘mistakes’ occur.

At Tao of Clay, these principles shape everything we do: our classes, workshops, and the way we show up for each other in the studio. Whether you're hand-building, wheel-throwing, or just getting your hands dirty for the first time, know that clay is as much about the journey as the final piece. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
